Human Capital - research, education and talent at all levels
There are more than 20,000 students at LBSP. It is a magnet for international talent, especially in the field of life sciences and health (LSH). What makes LBSP unique in the Netherlands and Europe – and indeed the world – is that it offers the entire range of studies from secondary vocational to academic education. In addition, Leiden University of Applied Sciences, Paul Janssen Futurelab Leiden, Biotech Training Facility (BTF) and Boerhaave Nascholing offer postgraduate and refresher courses.
This creates a highly attractive location for companies in LSH, not least those involved in researching and developing new drugs and health interventions. We are currently working hard to further align the educational offer with the needs of the organisations at LBSP by creating a ‘Human Capital Agenda’ (HCA) with all relevant stakeholders. The arrival of Bristol Myers Squibb, which will be recruiting between 500 and 700 new employees, will be the pilot for the HCA. The Centre for Innovative Craftsmanship (CIV) Bio Sciences is another key project that will shape collaboration between education and the business community.

'Access to Human Capital' community
The LBSP Foundation has a ‘Access to Human Capital’ community. Members include HR specialists, education managers, student representatives, corporate recruiters, alumni and external HR experts.
The community consists of six different subgroups in which everyone at LBSP can access information, share knowledge, expand their network and help to stimulate a talented workforce:
Join our Human Capital community by applying for one of the sub groups (please send an email to community@lbsp.nl) or by becoming a member of our growing Human Capital LinkedIn group: click here.
An overview of upcoming activities and events can be found in the LBSP event calendar.
CIV partial agreement signed
The bioscience sector is changing. As a different set of skills and knowledge will be required in the foreseeable future, it is important that employees continue to develop their abilities. The LLO CIV Bio Sciences Partial Agreement was signed on 21 September by Otto Jelsma, chairman of the executive board of mboRijnland, on behalf of 12 partners.
Organisations at LBSP are joining forces to promote life long learning (LLO: Leven Lang Ontwikkelen) at the workplace. CIV Bio Sciences initiated this partnership which aims to optimise the link between vocational education and the demands of the labour market and business community.
The graphic below depicts how the different activities of CIV Bio Sciences relate to the LBSP Foundation and the EBZ. The partial agreement forms part of the wider HCA programme at LBSP and primarily focuses on re-education, continued education and further education at vocational and bachelor levels.

Regmed minor
To respond to the growing demand for specialised analysts, Leiden University of Applied Sciences and a number of companies at LBSP have developed an educational programme that focuses on future healthcare. The Regmed (‘Regenerative Medicine Development’) minor covers opportunities and techniques in the field of stem cell, immune cell and gene therapy. In addition to the course programme, students will have access to guest lectures from partner experts from Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC), NecstGen, Janssen and Batavia Biosciences.
Catch them young
The decline in students choosing the N (nature and health/technology) profile in secondary schools has led to a general lack of interest in technical education. Combined with a decrease in the number of 16 year olds in the Leiden region, it could lead to a shortage of new students in this area and eventually adversely impact the growth strategy of organisations at LBSP.
C3 helps young people discover and cultivate their talents in chemistry and life sciences and has developed the ‘We are chemistry’ campaign in partnership with various companies. Online guest lectures are provided in which professionals talk about their work and business. Other activities include ‘Lab experience days’ and the 'Imagination at work' initiative. Discover how your organisation can contribute towards career orientation: https://www.c3.nl/bedrijven/.
Get students ready for the job market

Biotech Training Facility
At Biotech Training Facility (BTF), hands-on (bio)pharmaceutical training is given in an actual, real-life production environment. In addition, BTF developed GMP eLearning modules and live online interactive webinars on several topics. Vaccine production is a hot topic as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. BTF’s interactive Online Vaccine Production Academy is starting again in November! You will learn all about the different steps of vaccine production, batch release, development, and regulations in 8 modules.
A solid GMP training is a basic requirement for working in the pharmaceutical industry. BTF proudly presents its unique, interactive and fun eLearning GMP course in three parts.
You can find a complete overview of their courses on Training Strategy — Biotech Training Facility.
International Talent Programme
Labour shortages are even larger than before the pandemic and not all vacancies can be filled with employees from the South Holland region or even the Netherlands. South-Holland is joining forces with an International Talent Programme to attract and retain international talent and specialised business services. The programme will run until at least 2023 with the aim of guaranteeing a long-term solution for the region. The focus is on scarce STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) profiles, specifically for start-ups and scale-ups. EBZ also has various other projects underway as part of its Human Capital Agreement. Stay up to date with the various EBZ projects, activities and events here.

Hartlijn update
Work on the Hartlijn – a bicycle and foot path that will connect all central points at LBSP – is moving full steam ahead. Work will continue this month on the western side of Sylviusweg to lay the bicycle lane alongside the buildings (see below: phase 1.4).
At the start of 2022, work will start on Zernikendreef. We will keep you informed.
For up-to-date information, download the 'BAM infra projects' app (App Store, Google Play or scan the QR code).
Lumos Solem: Light in the darkness
You may have noticed that many lamp posts at the LBSP are defective. Huschka Security has performed an inspection and shared the results with the municipality of Leiden. Repairs will start as soon as possible.

Introducing Ida, our team member
“Alone you go faster, together you go further.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello everyone, I have been director of the LBSP Foundation since September 2019. My background is to build ecosystems in many different areas. And with this job at the LBSP, all my experience and competences come together.
I am delighted that we can have face to face meetings again, not least because my strength lies in connecting people and getting parties to work together. That was quite challenging online.
I thoroughly enjoy my job, which I would not have been able to do without the support of our fantastic, passionate team and all the organisations that are helping us so effectively to transform into the best LSH innovation district in the world!
Do not hesitate to get in touch with me or my colleagues. We are always happy to help you with further growth and make new connections.
