Leiden2022
This year will be special! The spotlight will be on Leiden as European City of Science 2022. With the help of local, national and international partners, Leiden2022 will connect science and society through a 365-day programme, focusing on a different topic each day. From bats to diabetes and robots, it will show how science can be key to just about everything. Keep an eye on the Volkskrant on Thursday with a special on Leiden!
As you probably noticed many construction works are taking place at LBSP. New buildings are rising up and Kadans Plus Ultra is welcoming their first tenants. Improvements to the Hartlijn are also in full swing, which will make LBSP easier to commute for cyclists and pedestrians. And there is more good news: LBSP has acquired its own bus line. The line will follow a limited route for this first month. From 30 January onwards, the bus will run in a loop between Leiden Central Station and the Oegstgeest part of the LBSP.
We look forward to working together with you to ensure that 2022 becomes a fascinating year full of stimulating encounters and fruitful connections.

LBSP Campus update
New public transport plan in use
New bus lines and routes as well as a fresh timetable for journeys to, from and through LBSP are in use. The lines to remember are 9, 38 and 90, which will replace the current lines 37, 221 and 621. Plan your journey and consult the new timetable at arriva.nl/consumers.htm.
Ready, set… not quite yet
The new public transport plan will make LBSP easier to reach, although we are not quite there yet. As the viaduct on Robert Boyleweg under the A44 motorway is still under construction, there will be a deviated route for the time being.
Introducing the new lines
- Line 9: Leiden Central Station – Leiden Bio Science Park – Leiden Central Station
The new city line 9 will replace peak line 621. A ‘loop bus’ service during peak hours on workdays only.
- Line 38: Unmanned Valley – Valkenburg – Leiden Bio Science Park – Leiden Central Station
An hourly service, 7 days a week until about 19.00.
- Line 90: Lisse – Katwijk – Rijnsburg – Nieuw Rhijngeest – Wassenaarseweg – Leiden Central Station
Line 90 will replace line 37. An hourly service, 7 days a week until late at night.
These three bus lines will run more frequently during peak hours (together up to between 10 and 12 departures per hour), allowing for ample travel options from Leiden Central Station. All buses going to LBSP will depart from platform F.
LBSP line network from 30 January onwards
The dotted lines show the bus routes from 30 January onwards. Updates on the new routes will appear in the next newsletter.
Hartlijn update: new traffic layout on Zernikedreef in use since 14 January
A new car and freight traffic layout on Zernikedreef whereby the two directions are split by water took effect on 14 January. This will block the left turn into Sylviusweg coming from the Einsteinweg-Zernikedreef direction (see image below).
Trucks will no longer be allowed to stop on the road for loading and unloading in this area. These adjustments will be permanent, thereby improving safety for both cyclists and pedestrians.
Narrowing the Zernikedreef is part to the new layout, which allows for a greenbelt between the road and the pavement. At the end of January, some of the trees will be replanted near the Einsteinweg.
The placing of the sidewalks and bicycle path alongside the TNO premises will commence once all the trees have been replanted.
Gritting at LBSP
To reduce risks caused by ice and frost, all major routes at LBSP will be de-iced, cleared from snow and gritted by the municipalities of Leiden and Oegstgeest. The municipalities are not responsible for private parking areas and roads. Each organisation is expected to timely clear and grit their own grounds. Velzel Hoveniers & Groeningenieurs has an arrangement with the OVBSP (entrepreneurs’ association) regarding de-icing packages and gritting and clearing snow when needed.

Introducing our team members, Hidde Zittersteijn
“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey, this is me!
My name is Hidde Zittersteijn and I joined the LBSP Foundation team in January. I graduated with a BSc in biology at IBL and then did a biomedical master’s degree at LUMC.
Driven by a deep fascination with genome editing (gene therapy), I was fortunate enough to do my PhD at LUMC while being part of a team comprising Manuel Gonçalves and Rob Hoeben. During my studies over the last nine years, I have had the privilege of watching LBSP grow each year and now have the chance to become part of the story.
I will start by getting to know you all and your goals. By developing new collaborations, shared facilities, our famous TechTalks and the unlock_ start-up incubation programme, we aim to create the optimal breeding ground for impactful LSH innovation. As a Communities & Projects lead, I will be involved in all these areas, helping you to optimise your innovative output.
Feel free to reach out if you are looking for fresh opportunities or just want a cup of coffee!

Know your LBSP
We’ve got a lot going on at LBSP. Did you know that...
◼️ Leiden International School will open its doors in September 2022
Leiden will soon have a new international primary school, scheduled to open in September. In recent years, a diligent search was made for a suitable location and a committed education provider. Both have now been found: Stichting Confessioneel Onderwijs Leiden (SCOL) will start the new primary school in a number of empty classrooms of the Joppenszschool on Van Vollenhovenkade.
This is excellent news for the international community, including the one at LBSP. There is substantial demand for this type of education in the region. The new school will help strengthen the business climate and complete Leiden’s education offer.

◼️ An app for notifications about public space
The Municipality of Leiden is constantly working to improve its services. It is also making it easier for residents and businesses to report concerns related to public spaces and safety and security.
The Mijn Gemeente (My Municipality) app can now be used for reporting such concerns, replacing previous notification apps like Verbeterdebuurt and Buiten Beter. The user-friendly app also offers the option to send notifications anonymously.
The app (in Dutch) can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play.
