Building an Innovation District
The Dutch government has recently announced the grant recipients from the second round of the National Growth Fund: Projects Round 2 | National Growth Fund. Knowledge and research institutions and/or companies at LBSP are involved in the following growth funds initiatives that have been granted:
- Biotech Booster (€246 million)
- Oncode-PACT (€325 million)
- PharmaNL (€80 million)
- Werklandschappen van de toekomst (€26 million)

An annex on the Life Sciences & Health sector in Leiden will appear in the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant on 13 May. Read about the transformation of the Leiden Bio Science Park into an Innovation District, the possibilities of gene therapy, ways to improve the efficiency of treatment of ovarium and bladder cancer, ways to reduce animal testing, the impact of healthy gut bacteria and much more.
LSH week - Leiden2022 event schedule
The Life Sciences & Health Week, as part of Leiden2022 (Leiden City of Science), will kick off on Saturday 28 May and will run until Sunday 5 June. Showcasing conferences, exhibitions and public events, this will be an ideal opportunity to come and see everything LBSP has to offer.
Weekend: Saturday 28 May till Sunday 29 May
The LSH week kicks off with the Public Regenerative Medicine Day on Saturday 28 May. This day is organised by the Dutch Science Agenda (NWA) and offers a platform for everyone interested in this exciting topic. The day will be free of charge and registration is not necessary.
The Museum Night on Saturday 28 May is a perfect occasion to discover Leiden's unique museums including Rijksmuseum Boerhaave, Naturalis and CORPUS. There will be a special Leiden2022 LSH program.
The exhibition Technophilia is on display from 16 March until 29 May at the Art Gallery of the LUMC. It portrays a futuristic world in which nature and technology have literally adapted to each other and have grown together. A lecture on this topic will be held in the LUMC Art Gallery on Sunday 29 May.
The TK Challenge Bio Science Park Run will take place on Sunday 29 May at 15.30. This 5-6 km run through the LBSP is open to everyone and ties in nicely with the prevention and lifestyle theme of the LSH week. The revenues of the run will go to Willem Alexander Children's Hospital in Leiden. Put on your running shoes and register here.
Week: Monday 30 May till Friday 3 June
The scientific part of the LSH week will be officially opened on Monday 30 May with the Global Impact in Health Symposium. The importance of international academic, public and private partnerships in solving global health threats will be discussed during this symposium.
During the LCAB symposium on Monday 30 May, students present the projects they have carried out as part of their graduation internships. The topics of these projects are diverse from measuring microorganisms in soil with DNA technology to research into the health of rhinos in zoos. Contact LCAB for more information.
Expert Class - Financing young Life Sciences companies. During this Expert Class on Tuesday 31 May financing options and successful strategies for young Life Sciences & MedTech companies are being discussed. The focus is on financing options for biotech and MedTech companies till series A financing round. Register here.
Tech Talk: Single Cell on Tuesday 31 May. During this TechTalk, we will present some exciting developments in the single-cell field covering the three pillars of scNL (technology, computation and application). The programme includes academic speakers from Leiden University and the LUMC as well as speakers from companies employing single-cell technologies in their workflow. Register here.
The FIGON DMD/EUFEPS Annual Meeting will take place from 1 to 3 June with the theme 'Boosting sustainable drug development in Europe: Top science below sea level'. Check out the website for more information and the programme.
NecstGen (Netherlands Center for the Clinical Advancement of Stem Cell and Gene Therapies) comprises a state-of-the-art facility for development and GMP manufacturing. NecstGen additionally offers cleanroom rental to allow organisations to maintain control of production while de-risking the capital investment required to do so. The official opening will take place on Wednesday 1 June from 16.00 onwards (invitation only).
Life Science & Health Career Event on 1 June
The Life Science & Health Career Event on Wednesday 1 June 2022 at CORPUS starts at 19.00 and will include an information market, workshops and one-on-one conversations. The event will be combined with the welcome reception for the FIGON Dutch Medicines Days & EUFEPS Annual Meeting 2022. Register here for the event.
Best practices on how to boost biotech innovation in the Netherlands will be discussed at the Bridging Dutch Biotech from Bench to Business event at Naturalis on Thursday 2 June. Main topics will be Entrepreneurship, Knowledge Transfer, Financing for startups and Support for startups. This event is organised by HollandBio, Planet B.io and Johnson & Johnson Innovation.

The installation Folding Life from artist Ana Oosting will be opened on Friday 3 June at the LUMC Art Space. This artwork is inspired by protein structures and is produced in collaboration with the LUMC research group of Meindert Lamers.

Discover the microscopic world around you! Have you always wanted to count insect hairs, inspect porcupine quills or see live how sweat on your skin is produced and evaporates? Then join a microscopy workshop at Rijksmuseum Boerhaave on Saturday 4 June from 10.30 to 16.30. Don't forget to bring some fun things from home to investigate! The (inter)national symposium Leiden Headache Center into a new era on 4 and 5 June provides an overview of the latest findings and treatment options in the field of headache. It provides the latest insights into various important headache diagnoses, headache mechanisms, and the latest treatment options. Participants will go home with knowledge about the state-of-the-art research findings and treatments for headaches.

Inspection tour of the park
Another inspection round with the fire brigade, law enforcement and the municipalities took place on Tuesday 10 May to assess where we stand regarding our goal for a ‘clean, safe and well-maintained’ area. By touring the LBSP by bike we look at aspects such as littering, lighting, road safety and parking. Our goal is to maintain the quality of outdoor areas and look for ways to improve them. If you have ideas or tips for things we should pay specific attention to during the regular inspection rounds, please send an email to maintenance@lbsp.nl.

Strengthening LSH cyber security
Businesses and organisations have to fend off cyber threats, including hacks, phishing and ransomware on an almost daily basis. To assist bioscience and health companies and institutions with their cyber security, BCI Global is engaged by the Metropole Region Rotterdam The Hague, The Hague Security Delta and the Foundation LBSP to work on a draft programme comprising risk analysis, consultancy, training, threat feeds, accessible tools and experts, victim support and certification of systems to ensure a more reliable transfer of data. Hartlijn update: construction continues Asphalt and markings have been applied to the bicycle lanes on Sylviusweg and Zernikendreef. From 8 May, we will remove the pavement from the junction Zernikendreef - Archimedesweg. The pavers will then be able to continue with the road up to the entrance at Batavia. The entrance at Tinbergenweg will remain accessible via Zernikendreef from Einsteinweg

Access to Knowledge
Our Access to Knowledge community comprises different knowledge networks. One of these networks is the Single Cell Network (scNL) that connects researchers interested in single-cell experimental and computational methods, as well as applications with the aim of addressing biological and clinical issues. The network provides a platform to exchange experiences, connect researchers with complementary expertise and unite the ‘single cell community’ at LBSP.
Tech Talk: Single Cell | Kadans Plus Ultra Building
The scNL will organise a Tech Talk during the LSH week on Tuesday 31 May to showcase the strength of single-cell technologies in Leiden and promote networking among experts in the field. scNL will present developments covering its three pillars: technology, computation and application. Our start-ups are onboarding!
The unlock_ incubation programme has officially kicked off and they are excited to start onboarding our six start-ups: Catherinn, dHealthIQ, Fibrocentrum, Hospital Hero, Rapidemic and SolBion. These diverse, young businesses each improve LSH in areas ranging from diagnostic approaches and therapeutics to e-health innovation. Over the course of two months, the start-ups will participate in six interactive sessions during which they will be coached and trained. They will meet industry leaders and fellow entrepreneurs and refine their pitches and business models.
The programme kicked off on 5 April with an introduction to the unlock_ community. The six new start-ups began practising their presentation skills as they introduced themselves. This was followed by a start-up speed date in which start-ups and experienced entrepreneurs asked each other questions and discussed business dos and don’ts.

NVFG invites innovative organisations to conference on 16 June
On Thursday 16 June, the Dutch Association for Pharmaceutical Medicine (NVFG) will celebrate its 60th anniversary with a conference at ECC in Leiden. Young and innovative biomedical organisations are invited to come and present their ideas and businesses during the event. There will be room in the auditorium for a number of stands/spaces to promote your company, free of charge.

◼️ De Koers van het Leiden Bio Science Park
The local newspaper Leidsch Dagblad publishes an interview with an LBSP-based organisation on a regular basis. Read the stories here (in Dutch).
◼️ New Science Route available at Leiden Tourist Information Centre
A brand-new Science Route city walking tour was recently launched.
The route connects the historic city centre with LBSP. Following a figure-of-eight path through Leiden, you will see rich illustrations and anecdotes that showcase the scientific journey of the city. The guide is available in English and a Dutch version is coming soon! The route guide is available at Leiden Tourist Information Centre.
◼️ Expat Centre Leiden organises morning walk-ins for employers
The Expat Centre Leiden is organising morning walk-ins for employers each Thursday morning from 9:00 to 12:00 at LBSP. The mornings are open to all organisations seeking advice or information on the services provided by the Expat Centre for international employees in the Leiden region.
This is the go-to venue for advice and assistance during the hiring process and after your international employees arrive. Whether your internationals need assistance with banking, healthcare or education options for their children, the Expat Centre can help with essential information to ensure a smooth and happy landing in the Leiden region. The morning walk-in sessions are held at the LBSP Foundation office in room 3023, BioPartner 3 at Galileiweg 8, Leiden.
