Leiden Bio Science Park:
Transforming into a leading Innovation District
Possible closure of CAHAL
You have probably heard that the Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) is planning to close CAHAL, the centre for paediatric cardiac surgery based in Leiden and Amsterdam. The decision to close the paediatric heart surgery and with that the associated research and training activities in Leiden, has an impact on the strength of the LUMC as the engine of the LBSP Innovation District with unmistakably big consequences for the economy and innovative power of the region.
Douwe Biesma, chairman of the board of LUMC, stated in Leidsch Dagblad on 18 January that closing CAHAL will seriously jeopardise the development of the Leiden Bio Science Park. LUMC’s work in the area of paediatric cardiac surgery in combination with regenerative medicine, is ground breaking. By removing the capacity for conducting research in paediatric cardiac surgery in Leiden, start-ups and emerging biotech companies will be denied access to a much-needed flow of innovation. More information on this topic can be found in the CAHAL dossier.
Support CAHAL for the preservation of paediatric cardiac surgery and it's contribution to the LBSP ecosystem: sign the petition!
Leidsch Dagblad is looking for entrepreneurs whose business will be impacted by a possible closure of CAHAL. Contact Wilfred Simons (w.simons@mediahuis.nl) if you are willing to discuss this with Leidsch Dagblad.

Leiden2022
Leiden2022 has now officially started. After the opening ceremony on 22 January, events are organised daily. Check the website for the entire program.
Definitely worth reading is the 'Who Knows Leiden' appendix that was distributed together with
de Volkskrant on 21 January and the New Scientist special featuring Leiden2022.
TEDxBoerhaavedistrict Studio: A Walk in The Park ‘Jamming like scientists’
TEDxBoerhaavedistrictStudio will take you on a virtual ‘Walk in the Park’ with inspiring TEDx speakers from the LBSP. The first stop of the virtual ‘Walk in the Park’ is the Lorentz Center where Arjen Doelman will be kicking off the 2022 series with his talk ‘Jamming like scientists’.
Be sure to check out the opening picture in the video, a brilliant design by Ire Oyekan and edited by Sheila Owen and our own LBSP Foundation colleague Esmé Postma, proving that a picture is worth a 1000 words!
The Leiden2022 Life Sciences & Health (LSH) week
The Leiden2022 Life Sciences & Health (LSH) week that runs from Saturday 28 May to Sunday 5 June starts to take shape. With a combination of conferences and public events, it will be a perfect opportunity to show what we have in store at the LBSP. The following events are planned at this stage:
The LSH week kicks off with the Public Regenerative Medicine Day on Saturday 28 May. This day is organized by the Dutch Science Agenda (NWA) and offers a platform for everyone interested in this exciting topic. Would you like to contribute? Then contact NWA via NWA_Reggen@lumc.nl.
The Museum Night on Saturday 28 May is a perfect occasion to discover Leiden's unique museums including Rijksmuseum Boerhaave, Naturalis and CORPUS. There will be a special Leiden2022 LSH program.
The exhibition Technophilia is on display from 16 March until 29 May at the Art Gallery of the LUMC. It portrays a futuristic world in which nature and technology have literally adapted to each other and have grown together. A lecture on this topic will be held in the LUMC Art Gallery on Sunday 29 May.
The TK Challenge Bio Science Park Run will take place on Sunday 29 May. This 5-6 km run through the LBSP is open to everyone and ties in nicely with the prevention and lifestyle theme of the LSH week. The revenues of the run will go to Willem Alexander Children's Hospital in Leiden. Contact info@tkchallenge.nl for more information.
The scientific part of the LSH week will be officially opened on Monday 30 May with the Global Impact in Health Symposium. The importance of international academic, public and private partnerships in solving global health threats will be discussed during this symposium.
The EUFEPS/FIGON DMD Annual Meeting will take place from 1 to 3 June with the theme 'Boosting sustainable drug development in Europe: Top science below sea level'. Check out the website for more information and the program.
Join us on 2 June after work at the Life Sciences Café at Naturalis. We are very excited to organise our monthly network drinks in collaboration with EUFEPS/ FIGON DMD and Naturalis. Pre-register here.
The installation Folding Life from artist Ana Oosting will be opened on Friday 3 June at the LUMC Art Space. This artwork is inspired by protein structures and is produced in collaboration with the LUMC research group of Meindert Lamers.
The (inter)national symposium Leiden Headache Center into a new era on 4 and 5 June provides an overview of the latest findings and treatment options in the field of headache. This symposium provides the latest insights into various important headache diagnoses, headache mechanisms, and the latest treatment options. Participants will go home with knowledge about the state-of-the-art research findings and treatments for headaches.

Hartlijn update: new traffic layout on Zernikedreef in use since 14 January
A new car and freight traffic layout on Zernikedreef whereby the two directions are split by water took effect on 14 January. This will block the left turn into Sylviusweg coming from the Einsteinweg-Zernikedreef direction (see image).
Trucks will no longer be allowed to stop on the road for loading and unloading in this area.
These adjustments will be permanent, thereby improving safety for both cyclists and pedestrians.
The narrowing of Zernikedreef is part of the new layout and allows for a greenbelt between the road and the pavement. New pavements are being laid and the construction of the bicycle path alongside the TNO premises has begun.
Keurmerk Veilig Ondernemen (Safe Entrepreneurship Quality Mark)
The LBSP Foundation works in cooperation with the police, fire brigade, Huschka security, local municipalities and businesses to create a clean and safe park. How this works is laid down in the Keurmerk Veilig Ondernemen (KVO) agreement. Several inspections are carried out annually and focus on various aspects, including traffic safety, park lighting and litter. Matters requiring attention are recorded in an inspection report and presented to the parties responsible for taking action.
Use of the quality mark requires a triennial recertification.
December 2021 marked LBSP's turn for a re-certification audit and resulted in the quality mark being awarded for another three years.
The LBSP Foundation would like to take this opportunity to thank all partners who took part in the Safety Consultation and the KVO-B working group for their time and commitment. We look forward to continuing and intensifying our cooperation to ensure a clean and safe, well-maintained park.
Move that bus! New public transport plan in use
New bus lines and routes as well as a fresh timetable for journeys to, from and through LBSP are now in use. The lines to remember are 9, 38 and 90, replacing the previous lines 37, 221 and 621. Plan your journey and consult the new timetable at arriva.nl/consumers.htm.
The three bus lines will run more frequently during peak hours (together up to between 10 and 12 departures per hour), allowing for ample travel options from Leiden Central Station. All buses going to LBSP will depart from platform F.
Introducing the new lines
- Line 9: Leiden Central Station – Leiden Bio Science Park – Leiden Central Station.
The new city line 9 will replace peak line 621. A ‘loop bus’ service during peak hours on workdays only.
- Line 38: Unmanned Valley – Valkenburg – Leiden Bio Science Park – Leiden Central Station. An hourly service, 7 days a week until about 7.00 pm.
- Line 90: Lisse – Katwijk – Rijnsburg – Nieuw Rhijngeest – Wassenaarseweg – Leiden Central Station. Line 90 will replace line 37. An hourly service, 7 days a week until late at night.

Introducing our team members, Henriëtte van Dam
“By highlighting the opportunities at Leiden Bio Science Park, we can help start-ups on their way towards successful entrepreneurship.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey, this is me! Henriëtte van Dam
I have always worked in Leiden. I joined the LBSP Foundation in 2019 and I love my job. Our team is small and varied which means we are somewhat all-rounders.
With an educational background in business economics and public administration and a preference for structure and numbers, I am mainly responsible for project management in the unlock_ incubator programme. This allows me to experience entrepreneurship at close hand and be part of the opportunities that the rich LBSP ecosystem has to offer start-ups and other LSH organisations and partnerships. Being involved in these types of projects is both energising and inspiring.
