Looking back, looking forward...
Although it has been a turbulent year, the LBSP Foundation managed to achieve a lot in 2021.
We launched our newsletter (you are currently reading the eighth edition) and our new website went live. We have also been actively working on developing the LBSP corporate LinkedIn page and our community groups on LinkedIn.
One of our main objectives is to facilitate knowledge transfer and interaction between all parties active at the LBSP. We have made major progress with our ‘Access to’ communities in 2021 which is reflected in our increasing membership numbers and the various events that were organised for these groups. Thankfully we were also able to hold several in-person events in autumn, including Life Sciences Cafés and TechTalks, which many of you attended.
Our incubator programme unlock_ which has already helped so many start-ups with taking the next step in their business journey, was placed in the spotlight many times during the past year.
And finally, LBSP enjoyed a lot of media attention and national exposure through Health~Holland, the Association Innovative Medicines (VIG), HollandBIO, the LSH National Action Programme and the National Growth Fund.
We cannot wait to continue to build further on a thriving innovation district with you in 2022.
But first, we hope you will enjoy the holidays with your loved ones!
With Season’s Greetings to everybody,
Ida Haisma

Building an innovation district
Leiden2022
Leiden will be the European City of Science in 2022.
The international launch of Leiden2022 took place on 10 November, exactly 20 years after UNESCO declared this date as World Science Day for Peace and Development.
Leiden2022 will be a 365-day science festival and will include the 10th edition of the interdisciplinary EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) conference, which will take place from 13 to 16 July. An overview of the 365 daily topics can be found on the Leiden2022 website.
The Life Sciences & Health Week will run from Saturday 28 May to Saturday 4 June 2022 with a combination of conferences and public activities. That week will kick off with the Museum Night on 28 May and will include the EUFEPS/FIGON-DMD Annual Meeting from 1-3 June.
You are more than welcome to participate in this special LSH week by organising your own LSH event. Please let us know if you already have something planned or would like to organise an activity (events@lbsp.nl).

LBSP Campus update
Hartlijn
The pavements and former tram tracks of the ‘old’ Sylviusweg have been removed in preparation for a new, separate bicycle path. Construction of the path from Wassenaarseweg to Tinbergenweg will continue until mid-December. The stretch between Tinbergenweg and Einsteinweg will be laid between 10 January and mid-February. The preparations for transplanting a number of trees to their new location on Zernikedreef will also take place in January. We will keep you informed of the progress.
For up-to-date information, download the 'BAM infra projects' app (App Store, Google Play or scan the QR code).
Fire prevention (during Christmas holiday)
Your offices and/or labs might be closed during the Christmas holiday.
In order to ensure (fire) safety in and around your premises, we would like to bring the following precautions to your attention:
- Remove flammable items and building materials (pallets, wood storage, etc.) from around your premises.
- Check your exterior lighting. Leave interior lights on in dark corners.
- Empty wheelie bins and place them indoors (out of reach of third parties).
- Have skip bins emptied on time and secure them properly in case of bad weather.
- Make sure that a thorough fire and lock inspection is carried out on the last working day of the year (including turning off Christmas lights and closing windows, doors, bicycle sheds and external storage spaces).
- Check whether the emergency contacts on file with security companies are up to date.

Access to Communities
Join the LBSP LinkedIn community
The LBSP LinkedIn community brings together professionals from all levels at the LBSP.
It provides local bioscience news and highlights campus and maintenance updates. It also publishes upcoming community and network events, while promoting collaboration and facilitating opportunities to connect with colleagues.
432 new members have joined the group since September and this number continues to grow each day. In total, we now have a network of 3,173 LBSP professionals. Our mission is to provide members with informative updates and articles that will help their careers and keep them up to date of the latest news, activities and events.

It has been a busy and active year for unlock_. From community training courses and programmes to participation in events such as Show Me The Money, unlock_ is driving entrepreneurship at LBSP.
At Leiden University and LUMC, unlock_ has placed entrepreneurial education on the curricula of bio-pharmaceutical science, biomedical science, vitality and ageing and science-based business courses as well as on courses at LACDR Graduate School. We have reached roughly 1,000 LSH students in Leiden and we hope to reach many more in the coming year!
In May, we welcomed six LSH start-ups to our incubation programme. Each start-up received one month of onboarding and a programme tailor-made for its business. Since then, our start-ups have achieved fundraising milestones and have shared their highs and lows while continuing to validate their business models. A key highlight was the launch of unlock_ and the opening of the start-up floor at BioPartner 5 in September.
In addition, seven LSH start-ups in earlier stages of development have participated in two rounds of the unlock_ pre-incubation programme this year. These start-ups received both general and LSH-specific training to prepare them for their first round of funding. The second group of participants will complete the programme this month with a final pitch on their validated business models. And that’s not all: four additional early-stage companies joined a more personal coaching track, while four scale-ups participated in our first acceleration stage training course.
We are looking forward to the year ahead with a new selection of start-ups that are ready to innovate in the field of LSH. Do you have a start-up idea and would you like to take part in our 2022 programmes? Get in touch with us via hello@unlock.bio.
Keep up to date with all of unlock_’s upcoming news, programmes and events by following us on LinkedIn and Instagram or visit its website to stay up to date with the latest news.

Introducing interns Daan & Bram, our team members
“You can’t plan your route if you don’t know where you want to go.”
---------------------------------------------------------------
Hello! My name is Daan Blok. I am 25 years old and recently graduated from Leiden University where I studied public administration. I now work as an intern at the Municipality of Leiden’s Department of Strategy and Public Affairs.
“Unity is strenght.”
---------------------------------------------------------------
My name is Bram Hof. I studied history at Leiden University. I am currently doing an internship at the Municipality of Leiden’s Department of Strategy and Public Affairs, exploring the type of work that best suits my skills and interests
I applied for this internship because of my interest in political strategy and public affairs, which stemmed from writing my master’s thesis on the influence of organisations on decision making concerning COVID-19. At the same time, I am actively identifying and exploring my career options. My internship focuses on the development of LBSP and the role of local government in this process. Together with Bram, I am focusing on LBSP’s national and international positioning and try to strengthen the dialogue and the exchange of information between the park and the municipality. We also want to stress the importance and relevance of LBSP to political office holders and the private sector. Both of us are working closely with LBSP towards the same goal: to transform LBSP into a leading innovation district. Achieving a common goal requires effective collaboration!
Connect with me on LinkedIn
One of my focus areas involves the development of LBSP, which is how Daan and I ended up working with the LBSP Foundation. In terms of strategy, we are working on positioning, benchmarking and building strategic narratives. From a public affairs perspective, we support the foundation by creating awareness about the LBSP with policymakers and raising the park’s profile within the public sector and politics. I think that further cooperation between the foundation and the municipality is a good thing. After all, we can achieve a lot by working together!

Know your LBSP
We’ve got a lot going on at LBSP. Did you know that...
◼️ Contagious! (Besmet!)
Have you not yet visited Contagious! (Besmet!)? You still have the opportunity to do so as the exhibition at Rijksmuseum Boerhaave has been extended until 7 August 2022.
Highlighting the outbreaks of contagious diseases and their ruinous effects on people’s lives, the exhibition also considers the outbreak of the coronavirus and ties in with the national debate on vaccinations.
◼️ The new Pesthuis complex
The Pesthuis Complex is currently being redeveloped into a sustainable, multipurpose building. With history on one side and the future on the other, the complex will explicitly connect Leiden city centre with LBSP by literally and figuratively bridging the gap.
The redevelopment will combine various functions that link to LBSP. It will house a food hall, co-working spaces, a short-stay hotel and a multifunctional space all centred around the iconic courtyard of the Pesthuis Complex. The former prison compound will be converted into a luxury hostel.
The new Pesthuis Complex is expected to open its doors in 2024. If you are interested in the co-working spaces, hotel rooms or short-stay apartments, please contact Sven Pieters at sven.pieters@citystone.nl.
◼️ Next newsletter
Our next newsletter will be the January edition. Have a wonderful Christmas, everyone!
◼️ Sharing and creating a community – together Do you know people in your network or organisation (or beyond) who might enjoy reading this newsletter? Please forward it to them. Let’s build the LBSP Innovation District together.
