The building blocks of the future
The amount of construction works reflects an area’s economic growth. LBSP is seeing an explosion of new building projects. We look forward to the construction and completion of several lab, office and residential buildings in the coming years.
In this newsletter, we will take a closer look at some of these projects and provide updates on other interesting developments and upcoming events such as the coming edition of the Life Sciences Café that will be dedicated to the celebration of the BMS facility on 28 October.

The Living Lab: forging vital connections at LBSP
Leiden University’s Living Lab has moved from its temporary location on the Oegstgeest side of LBSP to
a new site on the triangle between Leiden University of Applied Sciences and Mentor. The Living Lab is a unique outdoor laboratory where researchers and students can simulate and test the effects of humans on the environment in a highly realistic way.
Maarten Schrama and Professor Martina Vijver – Leiden University initiators
Comprising 32 ditches and forming a bridge between lab and field, the Living Lab facility provides the opportunity to study future scenarios for the Dutch landscape in relation to climate change and land use.
You can follow this Living Lab on Facebook and find out about various projects on its website.
To create a pivotal role for the Living Lab at LBSP, cooperation with public and private parties at the LBSP is being actively sought after. Everyone interested in making the transition from lab to field are invited to explore the possibilities with the coordinators (vijver@cml.leidenuniv.nl).
Spatial development
Due to the construction work and improvements taking place at LBSP, some inconvenience may be experienced in the coming period, but efforts are being made to keep this to a minimum for everybody.
A few of the construction projects are highlighted below. A full overview can be found on the project website of the Vastgoed department of the University of Leiden and the Municipality of Leiden.
In October, Leiden University will start the construction of the first large central car park on Ehrenfestweg (700 spaces). The facility will open in June 2022.
BMS will soon start building a CAR-T facility on the Oegstgeest side of the LBSP. It is scheduled for completion in 2023.
Kadans will complete the Plus Ultra building at the Kop van Leeuwenhoek by the end of 2021. The first tenants will move in at the start of 2022.
Spring 2022 will see the completion of the new Galapagos building on the Oegstgeest side of the LBSP of which some floors will be available for rent. See the online brochure for more infomation and visuals.
The Science Faculty of the Leiden University has started the renovation of the Gorlaeus lecture hall, known as ‘de schotel’ and the development of the new campus square. The steel frame of the Gorlaeus building is to be converted into a bicycle park with a focus on biodiversity.
In the Boerhaave area, DUWO has started constructing a student tower block with approximately 300 student units. The building is expected to be ready early 2023.
Near the entrance along the Einsteinweg, Yisheng has begun building two student blocks (about 700 student units), which are expected to be occupied by summer 2023. The groundbreaking was very recent.
Leiden University will realise a large indoor car park next to the building for the staff of BMS and other companies in the vicinity.

An app for notifications about public space
The municipality of Leiden is constantly working to improve its services and is making it easier for residents and businesses to report any concerns related to public spaces and safety and security issues.
The new 'Mijn Gemeente' (My municipality) app can now be used for reporting such concerns and replaces previous notification apps like 'Verbeterdebuurt' and 'Buiten Beter'. The app is user-friendly and you can choose whether notifications are sent anonymously or not.
The app (available in Dutch only) can be downloaded from the
App Store and Google Play.

'Access to' communities
Human Capital community: Intrapreneurship within your organisation
12 October
Companies are often breeding grounds for innovative ideas. But how can we let these ideas flourish? In some cases, innovations are kept in-house and that is not the preferred situation. A more suitable alternative could be, to consider creating a spin-off.
Register for the live event here to hear more about stimulating intrapreneurship and innovation in your organisation.
In addition to Access to Human Capital, we have four other communities at LBSP:

Following validation of their start-ups, these teams will be ready for their first round of funding!
In addition, unlock_ is running a ‘Client Contact for Techies’ course. A fantastic way for life science and health (accelerating) companies to enhance their client communication and presentation skills. The October and November courses are already fully booked! Registrations for the next round are welcome from all Leiden-based life science and health businesses (hello@unlock.bio).

Introducing Ineke, our team member
“You get out what you put in!”
This certainly applies to LBSP’s transformation from science park to innovation district. It also applies to the amazing group of colleagues who are helping us to achieve this goal. I feel honoured to be moving forward together with them.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey, this is me!
My name is Ineke Bakkeren and I have been the office manager for the LBSP Foundation since January 2020. I studied chemistry (pharmacology) in Nijmegen. I then had various jobs as well as my own web design business. Working at LBSP feels like I have come full circle.
Within the LBSP Foundation, I focus on implementing and coordinating internal processes and I am also responsible for HR and bookkeeping. I support my colleagues on IT issues too.
I look forward to meeting you soon!

Gulliver
To stimulate entrepreneurship, Gulliver organises an annual competition for young entrepreneurs in Leiden. We believe there are three vitally important factors that contribute to the success of a new business: speaking to the right people, gathering and processing valuable feedback and attracting appropriate funding. By taking part in the competition, you acquire access to an extensive network, receive both structured and ad-hoc feedback and have the opportunity to win €10,000 to develop your new enterprise. Registration is open until 14 October.
Register for Competition | Gulliver.
Bètabanenmarkt (Science Career Event) on 23 February 2022
The Leiden Bètabanenmarkt is an annual gathering that aims to connect students and companies. In 2019, more than 1,400 students and 67 companies attended the event. You can participate in several ways, for example with a stand, workshop or speed dates.
A great opportunity to present your organisation to the employees of the future!
